Credit union lending accelerates to an all-time high in the fourth quarter of 2015.

More than 6,000 credit unions, representing 98.4% of the industry’s assets have been reported in Callahan & Associates FirstLook. According to FirstLook credit unions, loan balances expanded 10.6% annually. This is 20 basis points higher than December 2014 when it was 10.4% and 2.7 percentage points higher than December 2013. Here are 4 key takeaways from lending in 2015.

No. 1: Credit union loan balances post an all-time high.

Loan balances topped $785 billion in the fourth quarter of 2015, up 10.6% from December 2014. Auto loans accounted for 42.8% of the increase, adding $32.6 billion to the portfolio annually.

No. 2: Credit unions post positive growth across all loan types.

Loan balances expanded across every major lending category. New auto loans and member business loans posted the highest growth rates of 16.0% and 13.3%, respectively.

No. 3: Average loan balances soar to record high!

Average loan balances posted significant growth of 11.1% year-over-year to reach its highest point ever at $14,672.

No. 4: Credit unions are becoming more loaned out.

The loan-to-share ratio posted its highest rate of 77.4% since September 2009 when it was 77.9%.
