The year: 1985. Callahan & Associates, Inc. forms and publishes first of thousands of credit union comparisons tables. We wanted to share that first table with you and highlight some changes. The following exhibit lists the top ten credit unions in 1985 as well as the group average. It also lists the top ten credit unions in 2000.
In 1985 Navy was the largest credit union and it maintained its title as the largest credit union for 2000. Seven of the ten members from the 1985 made the cut for the 2000 group. The total assets of the group increased from $9.0 billion to $42.3 billion a 372% increase. In 1985 there were 4 credit unions with assets greater than 1$ billion, today there are 48.
