Brother, Can You Spare A Dime?

Can you identify the title of the song and the original artist?

We devoted a large portion of this installment of Diversions to the power of freebies, so it's only fair that here in The Last Word laboratories we pay homage to the other side of the coin. Some musical artists write hit songs about love and relationships. Others focus on tequila and cheeseburgers (we're looking at you, Jimmy Buffet). But if popular song titles are any indication, nothing motivates people as efficiently as good ol' cash. We've carefully reviewed our iPod playlists and found some of the best songs about scratch, moolah, Benjamins — whatever you call your money — and have isolated a key lyric or two from each.

Can you identify the title of the song and the original artist? No Googling allowed — however, singing these lyrics out loud is encouraged.

  1. "Now that ain't working, that's the way you do it. You play the guitar on the MTV."
  2. "It's a crime ... share it fairly but don't take a slice of my pie."
  3. "I'll give you all I've got to give if you say you love me too. I may not have a lot to give, but what I've got I'll give to you."
  4. "Bobbie Sue, whoa she slipped away. Billy Joe caught up to her the very next day."
  5. "Your loving gives me a thrill, but your loving don't pay my bills."
  6. "'Cause the boy with the cold hard cash is always Mister Right."
  7. "You see him on TV any given Sunday. Win the Superbowl and drive off in a Hyundai."
  8. "'Cause you know it don't matter anyway. You can rely on the old man's money."
  9. "You've had enough, you ship them out. The dollar's up–down, you'd better buy the pound."
  10. "I'm the innocent bystander. Somehow I got stuck between the rock and the hard place, and I'm down on my luck."
