Callahan Bowl II

Massachusetts and North Carolina square off in head-to-head competition. To predict who will emerge as the Super Bowl champ, Callahan turns to credit union performance data.

It's that time of year again! Last year, Callahan's Industry Analyst John Marron boldly predicted that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would upset the favored Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII. This year we put our measures of credit union performance to the test again to see if they can accurately predict the winner of Super Bowl XXXVIII.

For those of you who weren't taking notes when we made our last prediction, here is our method. We examine seven ratios to determine the financial strength of the credit unions in the home state of each football team. We then tally up who performed stronger in the most categories and there you have it! A technique that last year beat the Vegas spread. Let's first take a look at the AFC and NFC Championship games from this past weekend.

As in the previous year, our picks for the conference championships were once again correct. For Super Bowl XXXVIII, we pick the Carolina Panthers to win because of North Carolina's excellent statewide credit union performance. Enjoy the game!

  • now i understand why, just a few short weeks ago, you sent out, for the "tip of the week", instructions on how to compare macro industry trends in two states. unfortunately, i think there is more correlation than causation. i pick the pats.

  • Just like Credit Unions over the Big Banks, the underdog Carolina Panthers will overcome the mighty Patriots. Credit Unions and the Panthers are the best choices this weekend and all year long. John Fox has his highly skilled team ready to do battle. This will truly be a battle won in the trenches. The national media does not give Charlotte and the Panthers any respect. This will change this Sunday night. For those of betting on the Pat's, please borrow your $ from out credit union.
