Graph of the Week: While Growth Slows Slightly, Credit Unions Continue Expanding

At March 31, 2009, credit unions managed 21,415 branches, an increase of 293 over the past year. The credit union branch network grew at an annual rate of 1.4%. With increasing economic and regulatory pressures on the bottom line, some credit unions are seeking to slow their physical expansion to minimize expenses. The number of credit unions reporting expansion plans (either through expanding existing facilities or building new ones) fell dramatically during the past 12 months to 752 credit unions, from 1,051 in the first quarter of 2009.
