Credit unions and supporters of the cooperative movement banded together to help raise $923,000 for the Children's Miracle Network during the annual Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run.
Despite the 7:30 a.m. start time, clear and sunny skies warmed the more than 15,000 runners gathered on the grounds of the National Mall on April 11.
Familiar faces in the crowd included first-ever women's Olympic marathon Gold medal champion, Joan Benoit Samuelson, and four-time winner of both the Boston and New York marathons, Bill Rodgers.
Children participating in the one K kids run around the Washington monument showed off their support by donning bibs featuring the No. 1.
Not do be outdone by those with celebrity status, credit unions turned out in full force, too, with more than 7,000 runners and more than 500 volunteers representing more than 70 credit unions.
For the first time, the race was broadcast live online via streaming video, so those at home could witness firsthand the exciting photo finish in the Men's Division.
