What I Learned About Marketing From The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air

The Marketo Marketing Nation Summit that took place last week in Las Vegas mixed blasts from the past with its best practices to blast emails.

As the manager of marketing and engagement at Callahan & Associates, I got to attend the Marketo Marketing Nation Summit last week in Las Vegas with my co-worker Sal Lopez. When I saw Will Smith was to be a keynote speaker on day one, I was puzzled by what the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air might teach 5,200 marketers.

In true 90s fashion, I tried my hand at recapping his presentation using the tune to Smith’s beloved sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (see below for a refresher).

Now, this is a story all about how
my life got flip-turned upside down.
I’d like to take a minute
just sit right there,
I’ll tell you what I learned from the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

In Las Vegas, Nevada, it’s Marketo Summit, Yay!
Raleigh, Carolina ‘s where I spend most of my days.
Chill’ out, maxin’, wishin’ I was by the pool,
And out walks out Will Smith,
Wow this keynote is cool.

When he came on the stage, we were ready to learn
because marketing knowledge is what we yearn.
What could a celebrity teach us? Sal and I got scared.
He said, The customer journey is important, be prepared.

Be authentic, he said, and there will be cheer.
Keep your marketing fresh and your message clear.
If anything I could say this keynote was rare,
I mean think about it It’s the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

He said go beyond selling, stay relatable and true.
Then he yelled to the crowd Yo Failure is okay too.
As he looked at Marketing Nation
we were finally there.
And that’s what I learned from the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
