The share portfolio grew by over $51 billion in 2012, an annual growth rate of 6.1%. Two of the components of the portfolio, share drafts and regular shares, posted double digit growth from December 2011.
Members deposited an additional $30.7 billion into regular share accounts, which are up 11.8% annually. Regular shares are the largest segment of the share portfolio. Share drafts posted a 10.6% increase, up $10.9 billion. The share draft penetration also increased, and 51.4% of credit union members hold a checking account with their credit union.
Share certificates were the only component to see a decline over the past 12 months. Share certificate balances fell $6.3 billion, as members are placing their money in other instruments to earn a better return.
