Which credit union has opened the most number of new branches over the past 5 years?

Andrew Bolton

There are 20,550 credit union branches nationwide as of March 2013, down 2.4% from a year prior but up 4.0% from 5 years ago. The credit union industry average for 5-year branch growth was 0.6%.

Not surprisingly, Navy ($54.4B, Merrifield, VA) led the nation in branch expansion over the past 5 years adding 79 branches during the 5-year span to bring their total to 229 as of March 2013. State Employees ($26.7B, Raleigh, NC) came in second with the addition of 31 new branches over the same period. Royal Credit Union acquired 11 branches (and deposits, loans and customers) from Anchor Bank in 2010.
