Credit unions in District of Columbia reported $17,238 for average share balance, the highest across the country. The average share balance at credit unions in DC jumped 5.8% from $16,301 last year.
North Dakota ranked the second highest in average share balance with $12,574, posting the highest 1-year growth among all other states.
Across the industry, the average share balance in the first quarter of 2013 was $9,604, up 2.6% from a year prior and up 24.6% from 5 years ago. The increase is due to growths in share drafts, regular shares, and money market shares, with rising members’ preference for liquidity in their investments and savings.
